How to Use the VA Combined Rating Calculator

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Search for your condition - Type in the search box to find your specific disability from over 200 conditions
  2. Select your rating percentage - Choose the rating the VA assigned (10%, 20%, 30%, etc.)
  3. Choose body location - If your condition affects arms or legs, select which side to enable bilateral factor calculation
  4. Add the condition - Click "Add Condition" to include it in your calculation
  5. Repeat - Add all your service-connected disabilities
  6. View results - Your combined rating appears automatically on the right side

Understanding VA Combined Rating Math

The VA doesn't simply add your ratings together. Instead, they use a combined rating formula that considers your "remaining efficiency." This means each additional disability is calculated as a percentage of your remaining health, not your total health.

Example: PTSD 70% + Tinnitus 10%

  • Start with 70% PTSD → You're 70% disabled, 30% "efficient"
  • Add 10% Tinnitus → 10% of your remaining 30% = 3%
  • Total: 70% + 3% = 73%, which rounds to 70% (VA rounds down)

Example: Back Pain 40% + Knee Pain 20% + Sleep Apnea 50%

  • Start with highest: 50% Sleep Apnea → 50% disabled, 50% efficient
  • Add 40% Back Pain → 40% of 50% = 20% → Total: 70% disabled
  • Add 20% Knee Pain → 20% of 30% = 6% → Total: 76% → Rounds to 80%

What is the Bilateral Factor?

The bilateral factor is a 10% bonus applied when you have service-connected disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired organs (eyes, ears, kidneys). This recognizes that having disabilities on both sides of your body causes additional impairment.

Example: Bilateral Knee Pain

  • Left Knee: 20%
  • Right Knee: 10%
  • Combined: 28%
  • Bilateral Factor: 28% × 1.10 = 30.8%
  • Final Result: 31% (rounds up in this case)

The calculator automatically detects when you have disabilities on both left and right sides and applies this factor for you.

Back Pay Calculator

If your rating increased, you may be entitled to retroactive pay from your effective date. The back pay calculator estimates:

  • Effective Date - Usually your claim filing date or date of increase
  • Decision Date - When VA decided your claim (defaults to today)
  • Previous Rating - Your old combined rating before the increase

The calculator computes the monthly difference between your old and new compensation rates, multiplies by the number of months, and estimates your lump sum back pay. Note: This is an estimate. Actual VA back pay may vary based on COLA adjustments and payment timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why doesn't 50% + 50% = 100%?

A: VA math uses combined ratings, not simple addition. Two 50% ratings combine to 75%. The formula assumes each disability affects your remaining efficiency, not your total health.

Q: What ratings round up to 100%?

A: You need 95% or higher to round up to 100%. A combined rating of 94% rounds down to 90%.

Q: Do I need to list conditions in any specific order?

A: No, the calculator automatically sorts them from highest to lowest for you (after grouping bilateral conditions).

Q: Is my data saved or shared?

A: Your conditions are saved locally in your browser only. We don't collect, store, or sell any personal data.

Q: Can I use this for a claim I'm preparing?

A: Yes! Use this calculator to estimate your combined rating before filing or to see how adding secondary conditions could affect your total rating.

💡 Pro Tips for Maximizing Your Rating

  • File for all service-connected conditions, even minor ones - they add up
  • Don't forget secondary conditions (e.g., sleep apnea secondary to PTSD)
  • If you have conditions on both sides (knees, shoulders, etc.), make sure both are rated
  • Consider TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability) if you can't work but are under 100%
  • Request increases for conditions that have worsened since your last rating
